I am Alexander Fieder, cYpher behind the decks. I have been playing since 1992 and building software for a living since 2001. aDJusted is where the two meet.
Behind the decks
It all began in 1992 at illegal parties, and later I took up residencies at the Temple Bar and the Gold Club in Essen. Soul In Motion reached furthest: the internationally known series, from its first night in 2017 to 2020 at the Rotunde in Bochum – and at the Pickle Factory in London. In 2001, I founded BassAssassins with D_Sasta and MC Tafman – a drum & bass crew from Essen, which has had its own label since 2018. The first release was my ‘Hidden Truth / Extinction’; the current singles are being produced with Apollo Irie.
In front of the screen
My first computer was a Commodore C16; the programs came from the Datasette. I typed out pages and pages of BASIC listings just to see a few pixels flying across the screen at the end. After that, I moved on through the series – the 286, the 386 and whatever Intel brought out after that. Since the late 2010s, I’ve been working on a Mac, both professionally and at home, where I create my music.
For many years, I worked as a developer, both nationally and internationally. Today, my focus is on project management – though programming and complex architectures have remained part of my role and still make up a large part of my work.
Why aDJusted
aDJusted was born out of my own needs: software that doesn’t get in the way in the club. What I’ve learnt professionally is reflected in the design choices – the audio engine runs headless, with the user interface communicating with it solely via an interface, much like the front-end and back-end in a clean web architecture. The fact that aDJusted Remote on the iPad uses the same engine as the window on the Mac is proof of this. Stem separation is also processed on your own Mac rather than on a third-party server. The first versions were called BassAssassins Player; since version 0.5.6, the app has been called aDJusted.
